As a therapist, I often recommend books to my clients that have helped them gain new insights and perspectives on their lives. If you're looking to delve into some enriching reading material that will inspire self-improvement, I've curated a list of six must-read books for the summer season. From exploring the power of resilience and rethinking your mindset to deepening relationships and discovering personal strengths, this reading list offers a diverse range of transformative insights. So grab a cool drink, find a comfortable spot, and let these books guide you on your journey of self-discovery and growth.

1. The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts" by Gary Chapman
This book is an excellent resource for improving your relationships, and I don’t mean just your romantic relationships! Chapman identifies five primary love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. By understanding our own love language and that of our loved ones, we can improve our relationships and create deeper emotional connections. Offering insights into the different ways people give and receive love and provides practical advice for improving communication and connection with loved ones.

2. Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
Brené Brown's "Daring Greatly" delves into the power of vulnerability and courage in fostering genuine connections and embracing our true selves. Through personal anecdotes and research, Brown explores how vulnerability can transform our lives, relationships, and work. This book will inspire you to step out of your comfort zone, overcome shame, and live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

3. Think Again by Adam Grant
In Think Again Grant challenges us to question our assumptions, embrace intellectual humility, and rethink our beliefs. With captivating stories and compelling research, Grant explores the benefits of reevaluating our ideas, adapting to new perspectives, and nurturing a mindset of continuous learning. This thought-provoking book encourages us to let go of stubbornness (this book was apparently written for me!) and embrace the power of flexible thinking to drive personal and professional growth.

4. The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van Der Kolk
This book is a must-read for anyone who has experienced trauma. When I say trauma I am not just referring to the big and easily recognisable stuff, like car accidents and war, I am talking about the small and significant traumas of our life, like a stray comment from a teacher or a parent that neglected our needs. It offers a comprehensive understanding of how trauma affects the brain and body and provides practical strategies for healing. This book sheds light on the interconnectedness of mind and body, providing hope and guidance for those seeking to understand and recover from past experiences.

5. Educated by Tara Westover
Educated" is a captivating memoir by Tara Westover, recounting her journey from a survivalist family in rural Idaho to achieving an education against all odds. This book explores themes of resilience, the pursuit of knowledge, and the transformative power of education. Westover's inspiring story will remind you of the strength within and the importance of self-discovery.

6. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck by Mark Manson
With a refreshing and humorous approach, Manson encourages readers to prioritize what truly matters and challenges conventional wisdom about happiness and success. Through the book he helps readers to let go of societal pressures and find meaning in life through accepting our limitations. This book will help you cultivate a resilient mindset and navigate life's challenges with a healthier perspective.
